Job Description:

The Physical Risk Specialist will work with team members to execute upon a best-in-class physical security program that consists of systems, policies and procedures with the objective of increasing company security adherence, awareness, creating a safe working environment, and remaining compliant with applicable regulatory bodies. There will be a focus on key areas such as executive protection, incident reporting, as well as project coordination.

Working with a team of highly skilled professionals whose mandate is to develop, implement and supervise contract services, physical security and emergency response plans and procedures within Business Groups, as well as plan and execute on physical security requirements. This includes contributing to effective security risk management programs, security system solutions, as well as providing special event and executive protection services and delivering advice, direction and education.

Under the guidance of the Physical Security Department, this position contributes to program effectiveness through comprehensive, high quality delivery of services.

This position may have interaction with senior management at the Corporate and Business Group level, peers within Corporate Compliance, IT Security & Governance, Business Continuity, Real Estate and Human Resources in the delivery of physical security, Crisis Management and Emergency Response services related to both on-site security and criminal incidents. As well, this position may be asked to interface directly with external government, security, law enforcement and emergency services officials, often at a senior level.

Main Accountabilities:

  • Proactively research and contribute to an advanced awareness of industry and technology trends, through industry organizations and networking opportunities.
  • Contribute to the physical security system program for company facilities through the coordination of external security installation vendors.
  • Contribution to the implementation strategy for the physical protection of people (employees, clients and visitors) in the workplace, facilities owned or occupied by the company and its assets.
  • Contribute to the mentoring and development of team members and encourage knowledge and idea sharing through collaboration.
  • Work with team members in identifying, developing, implementing and maintaining processes and practices to preserve life and safety, address risks, respond to incidents/emergencies, and limit exposure and liability for physical security and related risks.
  • Through subordinates, contracted service companies, or in collaboration with Business Group staff, lead the implementation of facility security services, operations and activities to serve and protect people in the workplace, facilities owned or occupied by the company and its assets.
  • Develop and maintain strong working relationships with key business leaders to communicate value and ensure that the quality of services provided meet our objectives.
  • Provide input into annual budgeting, monthly forecasting and variance reporting cycle
  • Maintain networking to keep apprised of industry developments and trends to achieve the stated goals and objective.

A core function of this role will be to plan, address and contribute to a corporate physical security programs, consisting of:

  • Physical Security support for special events, such as the Annual Meeting, Investor Relations Day, Leaders Conferences, Board of Director Meetings, etc.
  • Support of projects consisting of office relocations, reconfigurations, construction or renovation; and facility emergencies such as fire / emergency evacuation, suspicious packages and bomb threats, violence in the workplace, demonstrations and occupations, personnel injury and natural disasters.
  • Support in the consultation for:
    • Site layout of office space, security system and hardware design for newly planned, constructed or renovated facilities.
    • Facility security procedures.
    • Security support to HR for employee terminations, harassment or other employee situations where a risk of workplace violence may exist.


  • Knowledge of Physical Security and Life Safety legislation, principles, protocols, practices and industry standards.
  • Experience with vendor management strategies and functions, as they pertain to corporate level environment.
  • Firm understanding of organizational priorities and relationships.
  • Working knowledge of provincial Fire and Building Codes.
  • Experience with physical security system strategies (e.g. access control, CCTV, security lighting, perimeter/interior intrusion detection, security lighting, etc.).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, presentation, organization, strategic thinking, leadership and planning skills.
  • Proven ability to attend to tense situations, crisis and emergency incidents.
  • Experience working with both internal teams and contracted operations.
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to issues of ethics, diversity, equity and harassment in the workplace.
  • Strong consulting and collaboration skills.
  • Self-starter, strategic thinker, negotiator and consensus builder.

    Education and Experience:

  • Degree or diploma in security management, risk management or business administration, or comparable professional education/training in a field relevant to security management.
  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant experience within a corporate or government security department for a similar organization of comparable size and complexity.
  • Professional designation desired in security management (e.g. ASIS Certified Protection Professional [CPP], CSIS Accredited Security Professional [ASP] or Certified Security Professional [CSP].
